The entire Blair family, all five of us, will be taking part in the Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research on September 16.
In 1980, a 22-year-old Canadian named Terry Fox set out to run across Canada, from east to west, to raise funds for cancer research. The amazing part of Terry's plan was that he was an amputee, having lost most of his right leg when he was only 18 years old. Unfortunately, he didn't finish his "Marathon of Hope" as he was found to have cancer in his lungs 143 days and 3400 miles into his run.
Since then, Canadians have raised nearly $400 million for cancer research in the name of Terry Fox. Each year, events (runs) are organized across Canada, sponsored by local municipalities, schools and corporations to raise awareness and support for cancer research.
As an act of showing our love to people who are suffering from cancer, we at Grace Community Church, have canceled our church services for the morning of September 16 to allow our church family members to participate in this event.
For me, it is a personally important thing to do. If you read my blog with any regularity, you might remember that my friend David Norris-Elye passed away from cancer earlier this year. And more recently, and certainly much closer to the homefront, my dad was diagnosed with cancer this summer and is currently undergoing treatments.
We're not sure yet how we're going to get through it - probably on bikes. If you are able to support us in our effort to drag ourselves, along with a 3 and 4 year old, through a 10K event, please go to our page on the Terry Fox site and make a pledge. You can actually use a major credit card for your pledge. We thank you in advance for helping us out! PLEDGE NOW!
